How would you describe the
Gstaad phenomenon?
GvS: There are three secrets to
Gstaad’s success. The first is the
natural beauty of the landscape,
and the highly important role of
local farmers who tend to the
land, cut the grass and manage the
forests. Gstaad is the only luxury
resort which can still boast about
having an equal number of
residents and cattle – 3,500 of
each! Secondly, the strict
construction laws help maintain
our very own chalet-style
architectural authenticity. Thirdly,
it is the quality of life. For guests
and residents alike, there is no
place to compare with Gstaad.
With such a vast array of renowned
names returning to Gstaad time
and time again – when these
people are in a position to settle
anywhere on the globe – the
security and tranquility of life to
be found in the village are
priceless.
GL: Has Gstaad’s clientele
changed over the years?
There are families with ties in
Gstaad for generations. Yes, of
course there are changes, just as
different generations come and
go. Perhaps nowadays there are
more Greek families than before,
more Arabs and more Russians. I
love this about Gstaad: I love
being able to use different
languages in my work, and also in
society. In comparison to other
resorts where one only might hear
German or Swiss German, I
believe that the cosmopolitan
ambiance of Gstaad helps people
to behave with more respect, and
more tolerance towards one
another.
